5 Breathtaking SoCal Locations for Your Engagement Photos

5-engagement-photo-locations

Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to the Lin and Jirsa Site!

As OC photographers with over 8 years of experience, we’ve had the privilege of photographing some of the most gorgeous locations in the world, many of which are located right here in  Southern California.  The geographical and cultural diversity of SoCal gives you a range of options.  Alluring beaches are only a couple of hours from the deserts and mountains, which are within hours of bustling cities like Downtown Los Angeles. Historical buildings, diverse cultural influences, and amazing natural landscapes combine to provide you with a beautiful range of backdrops for your engagement photos.

So we’re here to guide you through the process.  Here are 5 of our favorites that we just have to share with you.  If you’re interested in our photography, we hope you consider contacting us.

#5 Mission San Juan Capistrano

mission-san-juan-capistrano-engagement

Founded in 1775, the mission is a rare historic location, and if you want a more old-world look, then the mission should be your first choice.  It was founded by Spanish Catholics and carries the title of the oldest building in California still in use.

Unique Architecture – The play between light and shadows in what seem like endless hallways create a stunning, romantic look.   Fountains, bells and other architectural elements create interesting foregrounds and backgrounds.

Click Arrows Above to Scroll Through Images

Beautiful Gardens – Carefully manicured lawns, flowers in bloom for most of the season and running water fountains give the center of the mission a wonderful charm.  There are also large, interesting trees that allow your photographer to play with the light streaking through the leaves and branches.

Ideal Wardrobe – Your ideal wardrobe for this location can vary from casual to formal.  Earth tones, like browns and tans will create a consistent vibe and match the stone walls.  However, stark and bright colors like reds and blues will “pop” and create an interesting juxtaposition of colors.

Ideal time to ShootThe mission is excellent year round.  The best time to shoot at this location is one to two hours prior to sunset.  However, most times of the day work for this location because of its many shaded hallways.

#4 Palm Springs

palm-springs-engagement-photography

Palm Springs is just a quick drive away from LA and OC. The desert oasis is a vacation and music festival hotspot with a preserved history as Hollywood’s playground.

For photographers, it makes a perfect backdrop for engagement photography with stunning desert landscapes, big mountain ranges, unique windmills, and a retro downtown.

Click Arrows Above to Scroll Through Images

Ideal Wardrobe – The desert look can fit almost any style of wardrobe.  It’s essentially a blank, neutral canvas that works with formal, casual, or even themed looks.  You can embrace the music festival culture, pop off the backgrounds with bold colors, or keep things casual and fun.

Ideal time to Shoot – The most important thing to note is that Palm Springs can be very hot in the summer time.  For that reason, we recommend avoiding the summer time unless you are well accustomed to temperatures over 100 degrees.

No matter what time of year, your best time of day to shoot will be right before and after sunset since most of the landscape is out in the open with very little shade.

Example Shoots – Click here to see shoots at this location on our blog.

balboa-park-engagement-park

#3 Balboa Park, San Diego

There is close to no end of lovely locations in Balboa Park.  With more than 1,000 acres of land covered in gardens and museums housed inside intricately ornamented Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, you’re sure to find great backdrops for your photos at every turn. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park is unlike other parks in SoCal in that it is one of the oldest recreational parks in the United States.

Ideal Wardrobe – The recommended attire for this location is formal, as it matches well with the classic Spanish architecture.

Click Arrows Above to Scroll Through Images

Ideal time to Shoot – While Balboa Park is pleasant every day of the year, the crowds are not! You’ll want to avoid this location on the weekends. Even on summer weekdays, you’ll have a hard time getting a clear shot. The good thing is that a good photographer can either avoid these crowds or embrace them as elements within the photograph.

For example, in crowded areas, using slow shutter speeds in conjunction with having the couple hold extra still can create an interesting image with a crisp focus on the couple and motion blur on everyone moving around them.

Example ShootsClick here to see shoots at this location on our blog.

downtown-los-angeles-engagement

#2 Downtown Los Angeles

There’s no place like Los Angeles.  As the second largest city in the US with a diverse population, sprawling metropolis, and hidden cultural treasures throughout the city, it’s truly a unique place.

Locations – To lump all of DTLA into one “location” is a little misleading since there are so many different scenes and backgrounds that can be used in any shoot. They include the following: Disney Concert Hall, LACMA, Griffith Observatory, Grand Park, The Lost Bookstore, The Modern Art Museum, Chinatown, Union Station, and many others.

Click Arrows Above to Scroll Through Images

Ideal Wardrobe – The recommended attire for Downtown Los Angeles can be described as “classy date night.”  We love semi-formal to formal attire for cityscape shots.  Imagine as if you’ve just come out of a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall or just finished dinner at a Michelin Star Restaurant.  That is the vibe that works best for these photos.

Ideal time to Shoot – While you can shoot any time of year in DTLA, keep in mind that the tall buildings block out the sun earlier than the stated sunset time. For Lin and Jirsa, no DTLA session is complete without a set of night shots that showcase the stunning city lights. For this reason, many of our clients decide to start their session at the tail end of sunset, capturing a few “daytime photos,” but quickly moving into their night session.

laguna-beach-engagement-photography

#1 Laguna Beach, Orange County

Among our clients, our most popular location is Laguna Beach.  These stunning beaches are the perfect backdrop for gorgeous sunset photos. Along the beaches, it’s not uncommon to find oneself entranced by shimmering tide pools. Even Downtown Laguna Beach is filled with unique shops and cozy locations for lifestyle shoots.

Click Arrows Above to Scroll Through Images

Ideal Wardrobe – Your wardrobe at Laguna Beach can range from casual to formal. However, keep in mind that some beach photos might require that you get your feet and ankles wet. Also, getting out to some of the locations may require walking on sharp rocks, so be sure to bring sandals or tennis shoes, even if you’re wearing something else for the actual photos.

Ideal time to Shoot – You can shoot year round in Laguna Beach. The ideal time to shoot is right before and after sunset.  The main weather-related aspects to watch are the tides and the swells. High tide and/or high swells can bring dangerous conditions and make specific areas of the beach inaccessible.

Example ShootsClick here to see shoots at this location on our blog.

Wedding Thank You Card | Etiquette, Time Limit, Etc

Sending out a “Thank You” card is a wonderful, thoughtful thing to do for your wedding guests. This article is created to answer some FAQs about the process.

Question: When Should I Send Out The Thank You Cards?

Answer: Multiple wedding resources state that you should send out your Thank You cards within three months. (Sources: Bridal Guide, Huffington Post). So if your images are delivered within 4-8 weeks, you will still have 2-3 weeks to order your cards, since most places can get their cards delivered within 5-10 business days.

Question: What Image Should I Use For My Thank You Card?

Answer: Since thank you cards are only 4×6 or 5×7 (generally), you can use almost any image from your wedding. Something from your couples portrait session or your wedding ceremony is a great idea. Some couples go with a collage of images, although we think that it can get very cluttered if you choose too many images. This is especially true if the images don’t match in colors and tone.

Below is a quick case study from Lawrence and Shannon’s wedding at the Trump National Golf Course.

Here is an example of a Thank You Card using a daytime couples session photo. The simplicity and negative space make this a simple, clean and elegant image to use.

Here is an example of a Thank You Card using a Wedding Ceremony Photo. This is a great moment to use for a Thank You card because of the pure joy in Lawrence and Shannon’s expressions.

Here is an example of a Thank You Card using a Wedding Reception Photo. Like the image above, the candid emotion in this photograph makes it a great candidate for your Thank You Cards.

Here is an example of a Thank You Card using a Night Time Photo. The romance in this image, along with the light and shadows makes this a good candidate for a Thank You card as well.

Kansar Bhakshan | Indian Wedding Ceremony

kansar-hindu-marriage
kansar-bhakshan-indian-wedding

Kansar Bhakshan – The Couple’s First Meal

The Bride and Groom are required to be fasting during the actual day of their wedding ceremony. This obligation may be broken due to circumstantial events, however since the day is so closely revolved around the Hindu religion, it is important to maintain the fast. Kansar, an Indian sweet made from crushed what, sugar, and clarified butter, is brought out by the Mother of the Bride and offered to the couple. Towards the close of the ceremony, right before the couple seeks the blessings of their relatives and friends (also known as Ashirvad), the Bride and Groom feed each other their first bite as newlyweds and also their first “meal” of the day. The traditional form of this ritual requires the Groom to feed his bride by placing his arm around her shoulder and reaching for her mouth, a moment that leads to a candid display of laughter and affection. Many times, since the Mother of the Bride is offering the tray of sweets to the couple, she invites the Mother of the Groom and they take turns feeding the newlyweds. This portion of the ceremony is conducted to symbolize that the couple must now share everything equally with each other.

Muhurtham | Indian Wedding Ceremony

muhurtham-hindu-wedding

Muhurtham – Auspicious Time of the Day

Once the couple announces their engagement, the Priest, along with the couple’s parents, come together to discuss the Muhurtham. Based on the couple’s horoscopes, the Priest determines the most auspicious day to conduct the marriage and time to start ceremony. The calculation is derived from Hindu Vedic Astrology and is of utmost importance in order to avoid the presence of evil eye at the wedding. Due to modern day culture, some couples opt to choose their own wedding date however maintain the tradition of calculating a Muhurtham time to begin the rituals.

muhurhtam-indian-wedding

Significance of Muhurtham

The Muhurtham time that the Priest determines thereby dictates the start of the Hindu marriage ceremony. The Bride has made her way to the Mandap and is shielded by a Terasalla, a curtiain that prevents the Groom from seeing his Bride prior to the Muhurtham time. A paste mixture of brown sugar, cumin, and turmeric powder is created for the couple to be smeared on each other’s foreheads. The combination of ingredients signifies the strength of the union shared through sweet and bitter times. The screen between the couple is then removed, signifying that the two separate individuals are now united in marriage. When the Muhurtham time arrives, the curtain drops, revealing the Bride and Groom to each other and thus allowing for the Hindu wedding rituals to begin.

Kalasha | Indian Wedding Ceremony

kalasha-coconut-hindu-ceremony

The Kalasha

The coconut is one of the most common offerings you find at a Hindu temple (it is also referred to as the fruit of God), and is used to ‘break new ground’ as it is smashed into two halves. It is offered in all sacrificial fires for all homa rituals (fire rituals) and is later distributed as God’s blessed offerings, known in Hindi as prasadam/prasad. The ‘Kalasha’ is a sacrificial object placed in front of the Havan, the fire pit located at the center of the Mandap. It is composed of a metal pot with a coconut placed atop. Adorned with turmeric and vermillion powders and a garland of mango leaves at its base, the coconut is blessed prior to the ceremony and is one of the offerings that the couple submits to the Gods. The pot may be filled with coins, grains, gems, water, or even gold. An auspicious red thread is tied around the coconut to symbolize the presence of the cosmos.

kalasha-coconut-breaking

Religious Significance of the Kalasha

In Hinduism, the Kalasha is considered to be a symbol of abundance and the ‘source of life’. As noted above, the coconut contains auspicious properties that make up the ‘elixir of life’ – attributing wisdom and immortality with the Kalasha. Many times you will find a silver or brass face tied around the Kalasha signifying the presence of a specific God or Goddess. Contextually, each portion of the Kalasha represents material things: the pot references a container of fertility, the leaves are associated with the God of Love, Kama, and symbolize the pleasure of fertility, and the coconut embodies prosperity and power.

In Jainism, a religion practiced in the Indian state of Gujurat, the Kalasha is festooned in a different manner. Two eyes are portrayed around the Kalasha, implying right faith and right knowledge. The Kalasha is also used for various other religious ceremonies such as the welcoming of a new home or the purchase of a new car.

Hawaii Wedding Photographer FAQ’s

Will There Be Travel Fees to Photograph Your Hawaii Wedding?

Yes, as with all of our destination packages, we charge flight, hotel and transportation costs to the client.  For more information regarding our destination wedding pricing, click here.

What is the ideal timeline for our Hawaii Wedding?

Destination Wedding timelines aren’t very different from local wedding timelines. The main difference is that you should prioritize a sunset photo session time.  Yes, Hawaii is beautiful at all times of the day, but the skies usually light up with color right around sunset, and how can you not get beautiful sunset photos while in Hawaii?

Are There Restrictions On Where You Can Shoot in Hawaii?

State parks will require permits and very few wedding venues in Hawaii only allow specific photographers to shoot at their location.  Our incredible studio management team can contact your wedding venue to clarify any restrictions they may have.

How Many Days Do Your Wedding Photographers and Videographers Need to Be There?

To be safe and account for any delays, we would like to be in at least a full day before your wedding.  Any additional time we spend there for personal reasons will NOT be charged to you.

Can We Schedule Additional Pre or Post Wedding Sessions for Our Hawaii Wedding?

Absolutely! We actually encourage our couples to do so, however, the additional photo shoot will be at an extra cost.

How Do I Know That My Images Will be safe during Your Travels?

We shoot 100% digital, so there is no risk of damage when going through security.  We use cameras that record to multiple memory cards.  After the wedding, we back up the images on our computers and keep one set with us at all times.  When traveling back home, we separate the backup and the primary cards amongst our team to prevent any photo loss through stolen luggage, lost luggage, etc.

Where Can I See More Lin & Jirsa Work?

We make it a priority to keep our website as up to date as possible. For our most recent weddings and engagements check out our blog.

Laaja Homam | Indian Wedding Ceremony

laaja-homam-hindu-ritual

The Ritual of Laaja Homam

This ritual takes place towards the end of the ceremony and is often not included depending on whether or not the specific region celebrates it. Laaja Homam translates to ‘the offering of puffed rice to the sacred fire’ from its Sanskrit origins. To read more about the Vivaah Homa, the sacred fire pit that is used during the Hindu marriage ceremony on the Mandap, click here. During this stage of the Hindu marriage, the bride offers rice with the help of her brother wishing her husband a long life and for the proliferation of their family. The bride is not allowed to offer the rice with her own two hands and therefore is helped by her brother or closest male relative.

The Groom places his hand beneath his Bride’s so that while her brother pours the rice, it slips through her fingers and a portion of it is shared with him. The reasoning behind having the brother assist with the pouring of the rice indicates the continuation of the links between the two families, especially for after the marriage. The couple then circles the fire together three times while feeding the fire with rice each round.

The ritual is held in observation of the Lord Agni, the Hindu Fire god, the ultimate witness to the marriage. The offering of the puffed rice ensure the couple to be blessed by Agni and to be offered happiness and prosperity in return. Hymns in praise of Lord Yama, the God of Death, are also sung in order to promote the prosperity of her new Husband and warrant his happiness.
